Tyler Robinson, 22, charged with murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in September, made his first in-person court appearance as his defense team seeks to limit media coverage of the high-profile death penalty case.

Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk, made his first in-person court appearance Thursday in Provo, Utah, as his legal team pushed to further restrict media access in the high-profile criminal case. Robinson arrived at the Fourth District Court amid heavy security, shackled at his waist, wrists, and ankles while wearing a light-blue dress shirt, striped tie, and beige slacks. He had previously only appeared in court via video or audio feed from jail since his arrest. The defendant smiled at his family members sitting in the front row, including his parents and brother. His mother was seen wiping away tears and clutching tissues throughout the hearing, while his father took notes during the proceedings. Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder in the September 10 shooting of Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. Additional charges include felony use of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. The state plans to seek the death penalty. Kirk was shot in the neck while speaking at the university debate event, sending shockwaves through the conservative political community. During Thursday's hearing, State District Court Judge Tony Graf weighed the public's right to know details about the case against Robinson's attorneys' concerns that extensive media coverage could interfere with his right to a fair trial. Robinson's legal team and the Utah County Sheriff's Office have requested that cameras be banned from the courtroom entirely. Photos taken during the proceedings captured Robinson appearing to smirk while speaking with his legal team before the hearing began. He was observed smirking again when Judge Graf announced complications with a scheduled January 30 hearing date, requiring the court to find an alternative date. "The January 30 date, there was some complications and so we have to find another date," Graf told the courtroom, with Robinson staring directly at the judge as he spoke. Early in the proceedings, Graf briefly stopped the media livestream of the hearing and ordered cameras to be repositioned after Robinson's attorneys raised concerns about the coverage. The judge also clarified aspects of a previous order regarding publicity surrounding the case. That order prohibited witnesses from making "extrajudicial statements" and required attorneys to inform witnesses about the restrictions. However, prosecutors argued the term "witness" was too vague, noting there were approximately 3,000 potential lay witnesses in the case. The hearing focused primarily on procedural matters related to media access rather than the substance of the criminal charges. Robinson's defense team continues to argue that the intense media attention surrounding the case could prejudice potential jurors and compromise their client's right to a fair trial. The case has drawn significant national attention due to Kirk's prominence as a conservative political activist and founder of Turning Point USA. The shooting occurred during what was supposed to be a routine campus speaking engagement, highlighting concerns about political violence and campus security. Robinson remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system. The next hearing date will be rescheduled following the complications mentioned by Judge Graf during Thursday's proceedings.
