Sherrone Moore, the former University of Michigan football coach, was charged with felony home invasion and stalking after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and threatening suicide following his termination for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore appeared in court Friday via video link from jail, facing serious criminal charges that have sent shockwaves through the college football world. Moore, 39, was charged with third-degree home invasion, a felony, along with misdemeanor counts of stalking and entering without permission. The charges stem from an incident Wednesday evening at the residence of a coaching assistant with whom prosecutors say he had maintained "an intimate relationship for a number of years." According to Washtenaw County First Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski, the woman ended her relationship with Moore on Monday and subsequently contacted the university to report his conduct. This led to Moore's abrupt termination as head coach on Wednesday, with Athletic Director Warde Manuel citing "credible evidence" of policy violations. The situation escalated dramatically after Moore's firing. Prosecutors allege that Moore repeatedly called and texted the woman, who refused to respond. He then "barged his way" into her apartment in Pittsfield Township, near Ann Arbor, where he allegedly threatened to kill himself. Emergency 911 calls paint a chaotic picture of the incident. According to reports, dispatchers received calls about "a male at the location in the house attacking (a woman), and stalking her for months." In another call, a dispatcher reported that Moore "grabbed knife, threatened to kill her, and then ran, threw the knife down," while noting he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was "suicidal." Moore was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Saline police before being transferred to Pittsfield Township authorities. He was processed into Washtenaw County Jail, where he has remained for two nights as of Friday's arraignment. During the court hearing presided over by Magistrate Odetalla Odetalla, Moore appeared in jail attire via video link, unable to attend in person. Multiple bond conditions were established, including orders to abstain from alcohol and marijuana. The charges represent a stunning fall from grace for Moore, who had been leading the storied Michigan football program for two seasons. He previously served as offensive coordinator before being named acting head coach in 2023 following Jim Harbaugh's suspension during a cheating scandal. Moore is married to Kelli Moore and has three children. Defense attorney Joe Simon declined to comment before Moore's initial court appearance. The case has become what many are calling the biggest debacle in college sports currently, raising questions about the vetting and oversight of high-profile coaching staff. The University of Michigan has not disclosed additional details about the alleged relationship or the internal investigation that led to Moore's termination. The football program now faces the challenge of finding new leadership amid this unprecedented scandal. Moore's arrest and charges have rocked the college football community, particularly given Michigan's prominence in the sport and the serious nature of the allegations involving domestic violence and stalking.
