President Trump sparked widespread outrage by blaming Rob Reiner's murder on the director's opposition to him, calling it "Trump Derangement Syndrome" in a controversial Truth Social post that drew criticism from both parties.

President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of criticism Monday after posting inflammatory comments on Truth Social that blamed the murder of acclaimed director Rob Reiner on what he termed "Trump Derangement Syndrome." The controversial post came just hours after Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead with apparent stab wounds at their Brentwood home Sunday. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of killing his parents, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote: "Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS." The president continued his attack by claiming Reiner "was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness." Rather than backing down from the criticism, Trump doubled down on his comments during a White House press briefing Monday afternoon. "I wasn't a fan of his at all," Trump said, referring to himself in the third person. "He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned. He was one of the people behind (the Russia hoax). He became a deranged person. I was not a fan of his in any way, shape or form." The president's comments represent a stark departure from the traditional presidential role of offering consolation or tribute following the death of a public figure. Even for Trump, known for his inflammatory rhetoric, the timing and nature of the comments shocked observers across the political spectrum. The statement drew immediate condemnation from celebrities and lawmakers from both major political parties, who described Trump's post as "disgusting" and "vile." Critics noted that the president was making unsubstantiated claims about the motive for the killings while police were still investigating the case. Reiner, best known for directing films like "When Harry Met Sally" and "A Few Good Men," as well as his role as Mike Stivic on "All in the Family," had been a vocal critic of Trump throughout his political career. The director frequently used social media to express his opposition to Trump's policies and presidency. The incident highlights Trump's unwillingness to set aside political grievances even in the face of tragedy, continuing a pattern of controversial statements that have defined his political career. As investigations into the Reiner family murders continue, the president's comments have overshadowed what should have been a moment of mourning for the entertainment industry and the director's fans worldwide.
