FBI Releases Enhanced Video of Brown University Shooting Suspect Casing Campus Hours Before Attack

Federal and local authorities have released new enhanced surveillance footage showing a person of interest in the deadly Brown University shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon, as the manhunt for the gunman enters its fourth day. The FBI and Providence Police Department released multiple videos and images Tuesday showing a masked individual walking through neighborhoods on the East Side of Providence approximately two hours before the attack that killed two students and wounded nine others at the Barus and Holley engineering building. "We do know that he was casing the area, and again, that's what criminals do," Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez said during a Tuesday media briefing, noting that video captured the man outside the engineering and physics building hours before the Saturday afternoon shooting. The enhanced surveillance footage shows the suspect, described as a male approximately 5'8" with a stocky build, wearing dark clothing including a blue jacket, pants, beanie, and black face mask. The individual was spotted walking through the area around 10 a.m. Saturday, with additional footage showing him near the campus around 2 p.m., just hours before the attack occurred. Behavioral analyst Casey Jordan told CNN that the newly released video reveals the suspect "seems to have an issue with his hip, a little knee knock... maybe a little problem with his left leg." Jordan noted that these physical characteristics could be crucial for identification, as "somebody out there is going to see these images" and potentially recognize the individual's distinctive gait. The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect. "We sent additional resources and personnel earlier today to help track down leads, canvass neighborhoods, and develop intelligence," Patel said on social media Monday. Federal agents from the FBI's Boston Division have joined Providence police in the investigation, with the bureau's Evidence Response Team processing the crime scene and laboratory personnel at Quantico assisting with evidence analysis. Authorities have been conducting door-to-door searches and examining surveillance footage from the surrounding area. Chief Perez has specifically called for residents in the area of Waterman and Hope streets to volunteer footage from their home surveillance cameras, including Tesla vehicle cameras. "We're asking you to go back at least a week to do that," Perez said during the briefing. The gunman remains at large and is considered "armed and dangerous," though officials said there is no evidence of any specific continuing threat to the Providence community. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect is still in the area. Jordan warned that the shooter is likely monitoring news coverage "obsessively," advising media outlets to avoid provocative language that might escalate the situation. "He is watching the coverage every single day," she said, noting that family members or associates might notice this behavior. Brown University has canceled all classes, exams, and papers for the remainder of the Fall 2025 semester following the tragic incident. A memorial of flowers and signs has been placed outside the engineering building where the shooting occurred. FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks emphasized that "no amount of information is too small or irrelevant" in the ongoing investigation.
